The building and civil works sector is witnessing important changes and its agents must migrate towards BIM processes in order to maintain their competitiveness in local and international markets.

The new Law on Contracts in the Public Sector in Spain, which transposes two directives 23-24 / 2014 of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, states that “for public works contracts, for the acknowledgement of works, for services and project bids, and in mixed contracts with similar elements, the contracting bodies may require the use of specific electronic tools, such as tools for BIM or tools of a similar nature”.

The European Union, the Spanish Government, the Generalitat de Catalunya (via infraestructures.cat), the Diputacio de Tarragona, and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona are already working and/or implementing BIM in their building projects.  From the Ministry of Public Works of Spain, there is a mandate to execute future building tenders with BIM as of the 17th of December, 2018.

Urban planning and landscaping projects require two more aspects to be considered: European directive requires the use of LIDAR as the new cartographic standard, and the Ministry of Development’s new mandate requires the new infrastructures to be executed with the use of BIM as of the 26th of July, 2019.

Additionally, construction companies should bear in mind that the private owners and promoters, particularly those linked to important national and foreign projects, and future operators of large buildings (hospitals, sport halls, hotels etc.) and infrastructures (highways, ports, airports, railway lines etc.) are demanding the use of BIM in their projects.

Many competitors (both locally and internationally) of construction companies already use BIM or are transitioning towards it.

Due to this, FOCONTA  ( Foment per al Desenvolupament de la Construcció and Auxiliary Industry of the Tarragonines Comarques ),  Gatell Enginyers  and  BIM Academy have organized a day to help the largest number of construction companies possible in their transition towards creating models according to the requirements demanded by Advanced Architecture and Construction 4.0. The event aims for attendees to understand what BIM is, how to implement it, discover what tools are necessary for its implementation (hardware, software and systems) and to see how this new methodology will contribute to the transformation of projecting, building and maintaining of building and infrastructures (ver programa).

The event will take place on Wednesday the 24th of October at 9:00am at the Teatret del Serallo (Moll dels Pescadors, Port de Tarragona). Builders or contractors that provide Construction Project Management or execution services are invited, as well as administrations and public entities, promoters and private constructors, and any other AECO agent from any phase of construction that needs to subcontract according to BIM requirements.
